Bette Midler and British singer Pixie Lott will star in helmer Peter Hewitt’s “Sweet Baby Jesus,” which will begin shooting this summer in Maryland and Ireland from a script by Steve Blair.
Set in the 1970s, hippies Mary — played by Lott, making her thesping bow — and Joe (yet to be cast) travel to the town of Bethlehem, Md., to visit Mary’s mom for Christmas.
There, Mary reveals she is pregnant, but not by boyfriend Joe. The pair stay at Eleanor’s (Midler) guesthouse for the holidays and soon the whole town is talking about a possible second coming.
London-based Intandem Films is handling international sales.
Hewitt, who directed “Garfield” and “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey,” said, “The script has fun subverting the treasured details of the Nativity, posing the question, ‘What would we do if it all happened again?’ “
