‘Mercy’ wins Media European Talent prize

Film is director Pawlikowski's first in Polish

U.K. based director Pawel Pawlikowski’s first Polish-language film, “The Sister of Mercy,” has nabbed the Media European Talent nod.

Award was given to producer Eric Abraham by Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, in Cannes on Tuesday.

The $2.4 million pic was produced by Abraham’s Portobello Pictures and Denmark’s Phoenix Film Investments, which Pawlikowski co-owns. Fandango Portobello handles international sales. Abraham is looking for French and German co-production partners. The 1969-set drama turns on a Polish nun who discovers she was born a Jew and was converted to Catholicism to be saved from the Holocaust. Pic is penned by Pawlikowski and Polish thesp/scribe Cezary Harasimowicz.
