Medusa to release 3D ‘Adventure’

Rainbow's fairy franchise takes a step up

ROME — Italo film outfit Medusa has partnered with Winx creator Iginio Straffi’s Rainbow on Italy’s first stereoscopic 3D toon, “Winx Club 3D: Magic Adventure,” an ambitious new step in the fairy franchise.

The $30 million budget “Magic Adventure” is the follow up to last year’s “Winx Club: The Secret of the Lost Kingdom,” which went out via RAI Cinema in Italy and was also released internationally, including France and Germany, grossing $95 million.

The Winx films are based on the “Winx Club” TV series, about a group of young femmes with magic powers — a cross between the Spice Girls and Harry Potter, with an anime vibe — seen in 130 countries, including the U.S. (on FoxBox).

Rainbow has a more male-skewed goofy gladiator feature toon, “Versus Roma,” in the works, as well as a Rome theme park due to open in 2011.
