‘Maigret’ star Bruno Cremer dies

French thesp played detective in long-running series

French actor Bruno Cremer, best known for his role as detective Jules Maigret in French series “Maigret,” died Aug. 7 in Paris of cancer. He was 80.

Cremer played the pipe-smoking investigator in 54 episodes during the France 24’s skeins run from 1991 to 2005.

Cremer, who acted for over half a century, studied at the Paris Conservatory before appearing in films including “Is Paris Burning,” William Friedkin’s “Sorcerer” in 1977, and Claude Sautet’s “A Simple Story,” which drew a foreign-lingo Oscar nom in 1979.

On stage he appeared in “Pericles,” “An Ideal Husband” “Poor Bitos” and “Becket.”

Survivors include his wife, Chantal; two daughters and a son.
