Pic released on 2,500 screens in 30 territories
LONDON — Helmer Anurag Basu’s “Kites,” starring Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan and Latin American actress Barbara Mori, has collected Rupees 650 million ($13.6 million) in its opening weekend, according to figures released Tuesday by distributor Reliance Big Pictures.
This includes $952,682 in the U.S., where pic opened at No. 10 and $393,890 including previews in the U.K., where it opened at No. 5. The film was released across 2,500 screens in 30 territories worldwide.
In India the film had Friday collections of $4.46 million and enjoyed a good weekend. However, box office showed a steep 60% drop on Monday. This was due to a wave of largely negative reviews in the Indian press, coupled with the Bollywood audience’s reluctance to accept a film where large stretches of dialogue are in English and Spanish. Although India’s official language is Hindi, the language of Bollywood, auds aren’t used to reading Hindi in subtitles.
Internationally though, “Kites” has been generally well reviewed. From May 28, international customers will have a choice between the 130-minute Bollywood version and the 90-minute “Kites — the Remix,” edited by Brett Ratner, which opens that day.
