Italian film wins big at city's film fest

SHANGHAI — Italian helmer Gabriele Muccino’s “Kiss Me Again” picked up a host of Jin Jue (Golden Goblet) awards at the 13th Shanghai International Film Festival, including the kudos for best pic.

“Kiss Me Again” also took the best screenplay kudos, while Vittoria Puccini won best actress for her role in the comedy, a sequel to Muccino’s hugely popular 2001 pic “One Last Kiss.”

This year 16 films from more than 10 countries were competing in the awards during the nine-day fest.

Chinese film maker Liu Jie took the best director award for “Deep in the Clouds,” a love story set in a remote mountain village. Liu’s film also earned the Jury Grand Prix.

Christopher Doyle won the cinematography award for his work on Neil Jordan’s “Ondine.”

Non-professional actors Wang Puze and Na Zhiye were given a special jury award for their acting in “Deep in the Clouds.”

French helmer Luc Besson won an outstanding achievement in movie art award, while China’s Chen Kaige received an award for outstanding achievement in Chinese movie art.

Chinese thesp’s Jiang Wenli’s directorial debut “Lan” won the Best Asian New Talent Film award at the fest, bringing the first-time director $22,000 and access to post-production facilities provided by Technicolor Bangkok.

Also honored at the Asian New Talent Awards were: South Korean director Jung Ki-Hoon, who was named best director for the mother-daughter movie “Goodbye Mom”; “The Executioner”, another Korean film, which won the Jury Prix; and “The Pawnshop” from the Philippines, which won the Students’ Choice award.
