Gaul’s Kinology has picked up international rights to Finnish fantasy “Rare Exports,” directed by first-timer Jalmari Helander.
Pic is a follow-up to Helander’s two shorts — “Rare Exports Inc.” and “The Official Rare Exports Inc. Safety Instructions 2005” — which have generated more than one million downloads on YouTube.
“Exports” follows a research group hunting down Santa Clauses in Northern Finland to export them all around the world.
Kinology’s managing director Gregoire Melin said Helander, a former commercial and music video director, gives “Exports” a 1980’s style kid-friendly horror-fantasy vibe.
The Finnish-Norwegian-French-Swedish co-production will be released on Dec. 3 in Finland.
Finnish outfit Cinet’s Petri Jokiranta is the producer.
Along with Spanish helmer Rodrigo Cortes’ thriller “Buried” and Johnnie To’s “Vengeance,” the acquisition of “Exports” underscores the diversity and breadth of Kinology’s sales slate.
“We’re looking for films with strong concepts, original graphics and up-and-coming talents from diverse nationalities,” Melin said.
Kinology also reps French hit “Heartbreaker,” which was just nabbed by IFC and will screen at Tribeca, which started on Wednesday.
