Kino International lines up ‘Poetry’

Company nabs U.S. rights to S. Korean Cannes winner

Kino International has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the South Korean Cannes winner “Poetry.”

Kino announced the deal Wednesday and will release the film this fall.

Written and directed by Lee Chang-dong, “Poetry” screened in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, nabbing the fest’s screenplay honors. Pic, toplining popular South Korean thesp Yun Junghee, screened in competition.

“Poetry” tells the story of a grandmother, who while taking a poetry class, discovers her grandson is involved in a horrific crime.

“This film is a profound statement about the human condition and should find an audience among all filmgoers,” said Kino Lorber co-prexy Donald Krim. Deal was struck by Krim and Youngjoo Suh from South Korean sales agent Finecut.

Kino will launch docu “Double Take” on June 2, followed by “Dogtooth” on June 25 and docu “Winnebago Man” on July 9.
