TOKYO — Imax and Japanese exhib Tokyu Recreation are partnering to open five Imax screens in Japan, Imax announced on Monday.
Tokyu already operates four Imax theaters, all of which have been money-spinners since they opened last year.
Tokyu’s Imax screens earned nearly $8 million on “Avatar” alone. Another 3D smash, “Alice in Wonderland,” scooped $335,882 on these screens in its opening frame, April 17-18.
Two new screens will be up and running by November with the rest operational by June 2012.
Tokyu and Imax will split costs and profits from the five new screens, just as they do with the current four.
