India sees launch of miniplex chain

K Sera Sera to open 500 sites in two years

Indian production and distribution house K Sera Sera opened its first miniplex theater in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

The company plans to roll out 500 miniplexes across India in the next two years.

Each miniplex will have only two screens with a total seating capacity of 150 to 200. Ticket rates will be lower than multiplexes at 80 rupees ($1.70).

The high definition films will be delivered via satellite from the K Sera Sera’s Mumbai base directly to theaters, reducing the risk of piracy.

The company has adopted the franchise model, where franchisees with locations with 3,000 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft of space will invest $108,000 each. For that, K Sera Sera will provide the equipment and look after the paperwork and ticketing.

From 6 a.m. to noon, the miniplexes will double up as education centers and revert to theaters from noon to midnight.
