Independent to bow political pic ‘SUS’

Release will coincide with U.K.'s May election

Luc Roeg’s U.K. production and sales company Independent is releasing its second politically-charged film,”SUS,” to coincide with the country’s election in early May.

Pic is based on the Barrie Keeffe play “A Long Good Friday” and is based on Blighty’s “sus law” of the 1970s, the nickname for the law that permitted police officers to stop-and-search people based on pure suspicion.

The story involves a young black man who is viciously interrogated after being arrested for the alleged murder of his wife.

This is the company’s second foray into distribution following David Holroyd’s “W.M.D.” released in October.

“Keefe’s play was written as a response to the racial undertones of the election in 1979 that brought Margaret Thatcher to power,” said Eric Stevens, head of Independent’s Rights Management division.

“It’s intentional that we’re releasing the film version around the upcoming U.K. election. Sus laws are not a million miles away from current terrorist laws.”

Thin Film Prods. 3rd Eye Films and Mensch Films are producing the Robert Heath directed pic, which stars Ralph Brown (“The Boat That Rocked”), long-time theater actor Clint Dyer and Rafe Spall (“Hot Fuzz”).

It will have a gala preem at the East London Film Festival on April 25 before opening in the U.K.
