Imax growing on Korean audiences

CGV to add 10 new locations in major Korean cities

Giant-screen company Imax will install up to 15 digital Imax theater systems and upgrade four film-based Imax cinemas to digital for Korean loop CJ CGV.

The rollout, announced Wednesday, will begin this year. Agreement comes after the success of the exhibitor’s five Imax cinemas in Seoul, Daegu and Gwangju, where “Avatar” in Imax 3D has grossed $6.5 million.

Per the agreement, CJ CGV will add 10 new joint venture locations in major Korean cities with an option to increase that number to 15.

“Our Imax theaters are boosting attendance and driving more traffic to our multiplexes,” said Kim Joo Hyung, CEO of CJ CGV.
