‘Hurt Locker’ tops Critics Choice Awards

Summit film wins best picture, director from BFCA

“The Hurt Locker” was hailed as best picture Friday by the Broadcast Film Critics Assn. at its 15th annual Critics Choice Movie Awards.

“Hurt” helmer Kathryn Bigelow also won for director.

Jeff Bridges took the prize for lead actor for his turn as a washed up country singer in “Crazy Heart.” The lead actress heat ended in a tie between Meryl Streep for “Julie and Julia” and Sandra Bullock for “The Blind Side.”

“Inglourious Basterds” trouper Christoph Waltz earned the supporting actor trophy while Mo’Nique prevailed for supporting actress for “Precious.”

Saoirse Ronan won the young thesp honor for her work in “The Lovely Bones.” The nod for acting ensemble went to “Inglourious Basterds.”

“Basterds” helmer Quentin Tarantino earned the kudo for original screenplay; adapted screenplay honors went to Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner for “Up in the Air.”

James Cameron’s B.O. powerhouse “Avatar” not surprisingly dominated in tech categories with a total of six wins, including cinematography (Mauro Fiore) and visual effects.

“Avatar” also took the award for best action movie. “The Hangover” won for best comedy while Pedro Almodovar’s “Broken Embraces” prevailed for foreign pic.

“Up” soared above the competish In the animated pic race, and it picked up the score award for composer Michael Giacchino.

Kudos were telecast on VH1 in a ceremony hosted by Kristin Chenoweth.
