‘Heartbeats,’ ‘Town’ to open, close Stockholm fest

Centerpiece film is 'Winter's Bone'

Xavier Dolan’s romantic comedy “Heartbeats” and Ben Affleck’s heist thriller “The Town” will bookend the Stockholm Film Festival, which unveiled its lineup Tuesday.

The fest, which runs Nov. 17-28, will unspool 180 films from more than 50 countries, including 108 Nordic preems and 16 world premieres.

Gus Van Sant will attend the fest to receive the Visionary Award, while the lifetime achievement award goes to local thesp Harriet Andersson, who appeared in many of Ingmar Bergman’s pics.

“Winter’s Bone,” helmed by Debra Granik, is the fest’s centerpiece gala film.

Eighteen pics compete for the Bronze Horse, including Romain Gavras’ “Our Day Will Come”; “Sound of Noise,” helmed by Ola Simonsson and Johannes Stjarne Nilsson; Julie Bertuccelli’s “The Tree”; and Gareth Edwards’ “Monsters.”

The Open Zone section includes Mikael Hafstrom’s 1940s noir “Shanghai,” starring John Cusack, and Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein’s thriller “Shelter,” starring Julianne Moore.

The American Independents sidebar includes Casey Affleck’s mockumentary “I’m Still Here,” starring Joaquin Phoenix; “Howl,” by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman; college comedy “Kaboom,” by Gregg Araki; and “The Romantics,” directed by Galt Niederhoffer and starring Malin Akerman, Anna Paquin and Katie Holmes.

Other sidebars are devoted to Latin American films, such as Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s “Biutiful,” and movies about extreme politics.

The documentary section includes Sarah Bertrand’s “Rolling With Stone,” about director Oliver Stone, and Jeff and Michael Zimbalist’s “The Two Escobars.”

Genre section Twilight Zone features sadomasochistic cowboy noir “The Killer Inside Me,” directed by Michael Winterbottom and starring Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba; Srdjan Spasojevic’s “A Serbian Film,” which was banned in the U.K.; and Daniel Stamm’s “The Last Exorcism.”
