Trapero thriller sells to Spain
Argentine noir thriller “Carancho,” the country’s highest-grossing film of the year, has sold to Spain following deals for France and the U.S.Arthouse distrib Golem bought the pic, which played in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard sidebar, for theatrical release later this year in Spain, while deals are poised to close for the U.K., Germany and Latin America, helmer Pablo Trapero told Variety. Los Angeles-based Strand Releasing earlier bought “Carancho” for the U.S. and Ad Vitam Distribution for France. Deals were inked with Korean sales agency Finecut. Buena Vista Intl. is handling sales in Latin America, with deals to close for Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Venezuela and other territories so the film will hit theaters in August, Trapero said. “Carancho,” a thriller about an ambulance chaser played by Ricardo Darin (“The Secret in Their Eyes”), is leading the charts for local pics in Argentina, grossing 7.8 million pesos ($2 million) since its May 6 release, according to B.O. tracker Ultracine.
