Baird's 'Davy Jones' Locker' aimed at overseas markets

London and New York-based Goldcrest Post is working with Gotham’s Jacoby Entertainment to convert Joe Jacoby’s 1995 family musical “Davy Jones’ Locker” into stereoscopic 3D.

During the two-month conversion the 35mm negative of the pic, which stars iconic puppeteer Bil Baird’s characters, was scanned by Goldcrest at 3K — to preserve the luminous image quality of the original neg, execs say — then subsampled to 2K.

The 52-minute tuner is being re-mastered with surround sound for 3D Blu-ray, video streaming and TV release. Jacoby hopes to launch the 3D version in international markets.

Jacoby Entertainment has acquired worldwide rights in all media, including merchandising, to almost 100 characters created by Baird, who died in 1987. It is developing “Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves,” using Baird characters, as a 3D musical movie.
