Actress joins West End musical for three-week appearance
Whoopi Goldberg has signed up for a three-week stint in the London production of “Sister Act.”
Actress is also a producer of the show, along with Stage Entertainment, but the thesping stint — her West End debut — reps her first return to the title as an performer.
Goldberg starred in the 1992 Touchstone comedy on which the tuner is based. In the upcoming legit engagement Goldberg will play Mother Superior to the nuns with whom the central character, a singer, hides while on the run from the mob.
Patina Miller continues in the role of the singer, the part portrayed by Goldberg in the movie.
Goldberg’s previous stage credits include acting on Broadway (in shows including “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) as well as producing (“Thoroughly Modern Millie”).
“Sister Act” began London perfs in May 2009. A German production is lined up for December, with Broadway targeted for spring 2011 and further international stagings on the way.
Goldberg is skedded to play “Sister Act” Aug. 10-31.
