‘Giant’ win at Cartagena

Film snags picture, director, screenplay and actor honors

Uruguayan pic “Gigante”(Giant) dominated Colombia’s 50th Cartagena Film Festival on Friday, snagging best picture, director and screenplay honors for Adrian Biniez and lead actor for Horacio Camandule.

Biniez is on a winning streak: His debut pic also picked up three major awards at the Berlin Film Festival in January, including the Jury Grand Prix.

Romantic drama, about a portly security guard who’s obsessed with a cleaning woman, trounced strong competition this year, including Argentina’s foreign Oscar-nominated “The Secret in Their Eyes”and Spain’s multi-Goya award winner “Cell 211.”

Tying for the win in the lead actress category were Alma Blanco for “La yuma”(Nicaragua) and Teresa Ruiz for “Viaje redondo”(Mexico).

Eliezer Trana won actor for “La yuma”(Nicaragua).

Supporting actress honor went to Mirella Pascual for “El ultima verano de la boyita”(Argentina, Spain, France), which also nabbed the cinematography and special jury prizes.

“Undertow,”by Javier Fuentes-Leon, won the Cinecolor audience award. Colombian gay-themed pic also won the Sundance World Cinema audience award in January.

Cartagena, the oldest festival in Latin America, celebrated its golden anniversary by paying tribute to Spain and to Spanish helmer Carlos Saura.

The nine-day fest also showcased a recent pic shot in Cartagena, the latest screen adaptation of a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel, “Del amor y otros demonios”(Of Love and Other Demons) by Costa Rican newcomer Hilda Hidalgo.
