After helming his last three films for Constantin Film, Dennis Gansel will shoot his next pic, a political thriller, for UFA Cinema.
“Im Jahr des Hundes” (In the Year of the Dog) stars Moritz Bleibtreu (“The Baader Meinhof Complex”) as a journalist who gets entangled in the machinations of the Russian secret service while researching a terrorist plot in Moscow.
The pic, which is set to start shooting in October, has already secured $2.6 million from federal and regional funders, including $1.46 million from the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.
Universal Pictures Intl. will distribute the pic in German-speaking territories. UFA has a wide-ranging distribution deal with UPI and Focus Features Intl. The latter has an option to handle international sales on UFA titles with potential global appeal.
One of Germany’s hottest directors, Gansel helmed 2004’s Nazi-era drama “Before the Fall,” the 2008 modern-fascist drama “The Wave,” which grossed $20 million in Germany, and vampire love story “We Are the Night,” which hits theaters this fall.
