City of Lights, City of Angels kicks off April 19
The 14th edition of L.A.’s City of Lights, City of Angels Film Festival kicks off April 19 with comedy “Heartbreaker,” starring Romain Duris and Vanessa Paradis.Weeklong fest unspools at the DGA, with tributes to helmer Claude Miller and the late Eric Rohmer, as well as a restored print of Jean-Luc Godard’s “Pierrot le fou.” Fest, which wraps April 25, programs 32 features and 20 shorts including several North American and U.S. premieres. Featured titles include musically themed pics “The Concert,” starring Melanie Laurent (“Inglourious Basterds”), which makes its U.S. premiere prior to a release by the Weinstein Co. later this year, and biopic “Gainsbourg: Je t’aime … moi non plus,” which screens April 24, fresh from its North American bow at the Tribeca Film Fest. Also in the lineup is Julie Lopes-Curval’s “Hidden Diary” starring Catherine Deneuve, Marina Hands and Marie-Josee Croze. French horror will be in the spotlight with the fest’s After 10 series expanding to five screenings, including the North American debut of the zombie film “The Horde.” Anna Karina and Cinematheque Francaise director Serge Toubiana will be on hand for a panel on the French New Wave to accompany Godard’s 1965 “Pierrot le fou.” The Rohmer tribute features a screening of the 1983 “Pauline at the Beach.” Prizes include an audience kudo, crix (in association with the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn.), short film and a first feature award. Competition films include Xavier Giannoli’s “In the Beginning,” which screened in Cannes last year, starring Francois Cluzet; Nicolas Boukhrief’s “Sphinx”; Stephane Brize’s “Mademoiselle Chambon”; Albert Dupontel’s “The Villain”; Christophe Honore’s “Making Plans for Lena”; Anne Le Ny’s “My Father’s Guests”; Emmanuel Mouret’s “Please, Please Me!” and “I Am Glad That My Mother Is Alive” directed by Miller, subject of the Focus on a Filmmaker spotlight.
