Company's former Danish topper heads for U.S.

Beefing up its manpower to build domestic and international formats, FremantleMedia North America signed Henrik Hancke Nielsen, the former CEO of FremantleMedia Denmark, to a development and production pact.

“I will be continuously looking to develop big primetime formats, reality and factual entertainment,” Nielsen told Daily Variety. “And of course like all TV executives, I will be looking to invent new genres that are groundbreaking and setting a new agenda.”

Asked about the difference between Western European and U.S. auds, Nielsen said he felt that “‘louder’ is probably a good place to start,” though he added that good concepts don’t have to worry about geographic boundaries.

“The pace of the shows is much faster here in America,” Nielsen said. “Viewers are not as loyal to the programs, or forgiving, which is why I think you see a tendency of unscripted television to become more and more produced. This stems for a fear of losing the viewers, but ultimately it is detrimental to the show, and audiences are more and more aware of this over-producing.”

Nielsen, who oversaw FremantleMedia Denmark’s operations from 2005-09 and exec produced the Danish versions of “The X Factor,” “Got Talent” and “Pop Idol,” will be based in Burbank. He also created and exec produced formats “Spoofed” and “Can You Duet,” the latter airing on CMT.
