Francophone fest unveils lineup

Competition includes three Oscar entries

BRUSSELS — Oscar hopefuls go head-to-head at the International Festival of Francophone Film, unspooling Oct. 1-8 in the Belgian town of Namur.

Fest’s 15-pic competition includes three submissions for the 2011 foreign-language Oscar: “Illegal” from Belgium, which also opens the fest; “Incendies” from Canada; and “La Petite chambre” from Switzerland.

Stiffest challenge will come from “Les Amours imaginaires” by Xavier Dolan, who took the fest’s top prize last year with “J’ai tue ma mere.”

Local helmer Joachim Lafosse will lead the jury, which also includes director Benoit Pilon from Quebec and producer Elena Tatti from Switzerland.

Guest of honor at this 25th edition will be actress and singer Jane Birkin, who will select a program of her own films and those that have inspired her.

Pro events include an exhibitors’ congress and meetings on eco-friendly filming and encouraging legal film offers on-line.

Fest wraps with French film “Le Nom des gens” by Michel Leclerc.
