Filmax Intl. broadens sales slate

Company represents Berlinale pic 'Good'

PARIS — Once an inhouse sales arm for Barcelona mini-major Filmax Ent., Filmax Intl. is carving out a second identity as a worldwide sales partner of other leading Spanish production companies.

In its latest move, Filmax Intl. has teamed with Telecinco Cinema and Mod Producciones, poneying up a minimum guarantee against international on the Alejandro Amenabar god-fathered “El mal ajeno” (For the Good of Others).

“Good” marks Filmax’s first association with Fernando Bovaira’s Mod Producciones, which produced Amenabar’s “Agora,” teaming with Telecinco Cinema and Amenabar’s label Himenoptero.

“Facing tough but not impossible market conditions, Filmax Intl. will focus on international name directors and new helmers with potential international projection and original vision,” Vicente Canales, head of Filmax Intl., said Tuesday during a panel at a Unifrance -Icaa France-Spain Co-Production Market in Paris.

Toplining Eduardo Noriega (“Vantage Point”) and Belen Rueda (“The Orphanage”), “Good” — a medico drama with supernatural elements — has both international potential and original vision, Canales said.

Amenabar’s Himenoptero co-produces “Good” with Mod and Telecinco. “Good” marks the feature debut of Amenabar’s a.d. Oskar Santos, from a screenplay by one of Spain’s most talked-up new directors, Daniel Sanchez Arevalo.

Spain’s top arthouse dstributor Alta Films will distribute “Good” in Spain.

“Good” will world preem at the Berlinale as a Panorama Special.

Another third-party acquisition by Filmax Intl., Spain’s first digital 3D pic, “Magical Journey to Africa,” will also world preem at Berlin in a market screening.

Filmax Intl. will continue to handle Filmax productions. Julio Fernandez’s mini-major is in pre-production on Spanish-language “Flatmate” from Jaume Balaguero (“Darkness,” “[REC], “[REC]2”). It has English-language “Exorcismus,” from Manuel Corballo (“The Just”), in post.
