EuropaCorp boards ‘The Hideout’

Crime caper is produced by new shingle Les Films Alakis

SAN SEBASTIAN — Luc Besson’s production powerhouse EuropaCorp has boarded Akim Isker’s “La Planque” (The Hideout), a crime caper produced by new Paris shingle Les Films Alakis.

EuropaCorp will co-produce and take French distribution rights.

“Hideout” turns on three small-time crooks who hold up a bank, make off with $50 million and hide out at a police station, where the cops, thinking them fellow officers, take them to their hearts.

Screenplay is by actor, screenwriter and stage director Jalil Naciri. Other key cast include Gilles Bellomi, Ahcen Titi, Guillaume Verdier and Samira Lachhab.

Budget for the pic, which kicked off a nine-week shoot in and around Paris on Aug. 30, is around Euros6 million ($7.6 million).

An artistic activist company based out of Paris’ Seine-Saint Denis, Les Films Alakis was founded in March by Naciri to battle what Alakis sees as the cultural invisibility of French working-class districts, whose media portrayal is reduced to stereotypes. Alakis producer Kalid Bazi called “Hideout” a “comedy with tragic moments,” which “played with stereotypes and cliches.”

Alakis is not linked to Besson Cite du Cinema studio complex, now being constructed in St. Denis, Bazi added.

“Hideout” forms one of a strong lineup of projects and productions presented at the San Sebastian Festival’s CRC Co-Production Meeting Tuesday. Forum was organized by the Ile de France and Madrid Film Commissions.

Bazi’s on-set commitments meant he could not travel for the meet.
