Both in talks for stateside remake of French hit
Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore are circling the English-language remake of Gallic smash “L.O.L.: Laughing Out Loud.”
Mandate Intl. is handling international sales on the project, which original helmer Lisa Azuelos is set to write and direct. Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher of Double Feature Films are producers. Romain Le Grand and Nathan Kahane are exec producers.
Pic tells the story of a 15-year-old girl who, dumped by her more sexually experienced boyfriend, sets her sights on his best friend. At the same time, her 40-year-old divorcee mother is struggling to move on with her life. The fraught relationship between mother and daughter provides the film with its narrative backbone, along with the younger generation’s obsession with instant messaging.
French version, released last year by Gallic mini-major Pathe, was a sizeable hit, grossing more than $20 million. In that version Sophie Marceau and Christa Theret starred as the bickering mother and daughter.
CAA packaged the project, set up the financing and is handling North American rights.
