Cube enters mainstream

3D pioneer launches first pic and skein

Cube Creative Prods., one of France’s stereoscopic 3D pioneers, is set to produce its first feature toon, “Flying Bazar!!”

“Bazar!!” is based on an idea by Cube co-founder Lionel Fages, written by French TV cartoon scribe Franck Salome with art design by Jean Barbaud.

Toon is about Bird, a young plane who leads a flying display team made up of whacky aircraft. They must compete at a gigantic international airshow to enable Bird’s grandpa, Doc, a Battle of Britain vet aircraft, to receive urgent repair.

“Flying display acrobatics are ideal for stereoscopic 3D effects,” Fages said.

The pic is budgeted at E8 million ($13.2 million), said Fages, who is in the process of recruiting a director.

Cube is in negotiations with Eric Jacquot’s Paris-based Blue Spirit Animation to co-produce “Bazar!!”

Delivery is skedded for late 2012 or early 2013.

Blue Spirit teamed on Cube’s first animated TV series, “Kaeloo,” a short-format family-skewed comedy directed by Remi Chapotot, airing on Gaul’s Canal Plus Family channel and unencrypted on Canal Plus, the Gallic paybox’s main channel.

Based out of the Ile de France stand, Cube will be showcasing a 3D episode of “Kaeloo” and a promo reel of “Bazar!!” at this week’s Annecy Animation Film Festival, which opened Monday night with a gala screening of Sylvain Chomet’s “The Illusionist.”

Cube was founded in 2002 by Fages, Majid Loukil and Bruno Le Levier, all former execs at Gallic toon pioneer Ex Machina.

Cube has carved out a reputation in France for creating commercials and theme-park rides employing large-screen formats.
