Colombia sets ‘Crab Trap’ for Oscar

Navia's drama is a festival fave

Colombia’s newly formed Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has selected Oscar Ruiz Navia’s directorial debut “El vuelco del cangrejo” (Crab Trap) to represent the country in the race for a foreign-language film Oscar nomination.

Pic, a festival darling, has won a string of awards including the Fipresci prize at Berlin and special jury prize for debut at Havana.

Written by Ruiz Navia, drama is set in a remote coastal town where a visitor gets entangled in the locals’ struggle against a resort developer.

Pic was co-produced by Colombia’s Contravia Films and Diana Bustamante and France’s Arizona Films.

Submissions for the foreign-language film Oscar must reach the Academy by 5 p.m. on Friday. Nominations will be announced on Jan. 25. The 83rd Academy Awards will be held at the Kodak Theater on Feb. 27.
