Cineplex Germany to turn digital

Move follows same decision by rival Kinopolis

German multiplex operator Cineplex Germany has said it will go completely digital.

The chain, which has 450 screens, is the second major German exhib to announce the switch to digital projection after rival Kinopolis took the plunge last week.

Cineplex, like Kinopolis, inked a digitalization deal with tech provider XDC to upgrade its screens throughout Germany after Kinopolis reached a similar agreement for its 123 screens last week.

With only around 13% of its total screens so far digitized, Germany lags behind other major markets like France and the U.K., which are at around the 20% mark.
