Chinese official arrested on bribes charge

SARFT exec was involved in Internet regulation

A director of the Internet section of China’s powerful State Administration of Radio, Film and Television has been detained by investigators on suspicion of accepting bribes related to a major project to integrate media networks.

The project, announced in summer, will merge around 1,000 regional radio, TV and Internet broadcasting systems into a single national cable network company.

Yang Peihong, director of the Internet section of SARFT’s media agency management division, was detained Oct. 18 by the anti-corruption bureau of the Beijing procurator.

News of her detention has been picked up by the Chinese media as the government seeks to keep a lid on public discontent with graft.
