‘Cendrillon’ off to ball

Fairytale is transposed to Wild West

ANNECY — France’s Herold and Family is advancing on production of “Cendrillon 3D” (Cinderella 3D), which is likely to be one of France’s first stereoscopic 3D toonpic releases.

“Cinderella 3D” is on track to bow June 2011 in France, Pascal Herold, its writer-director, said at this week’s Annecy Animation Festival.

Toronto-based sales company Cinemavault, headed by Nick Stiliadis, has taken international rights to “Cinderella.”

The pic is part-financed by company equity, bolstered by Herold’s sale of vidgame developer-publisher Nadeo in October.

Herold is closing both French distribution and TV sales deals. Budget is Euros 11 million ($13.2 million), Herold said at Annecy.

“Cinderella 3D” is produced by Herold and Family and Belgium’s Nexus. Production is being carried out at Delacave Studio in Paris.

Set in the American Wild West, and freely adapting a novel by Charles Perrault — although Herold points out there are more than 500 versions of the Cinderella tale worldwide — “Cinderella 3D” uses main characters with animal- and bird-featured humans: vultures, iguanas and dogs. Cinderella becomes a cute deer-faced tomboy, who loses a tooth in a brawl when pirates crash Prince Charming’s ball. Cinderella’s fairy godmother is an old American Indian sorcerer.

“Cinderella 3D” has been voiced by Alexandra Lamy (“Ricky”), Yolande Moreau (“Seraphine”) and Michel Boujenah (“God’s Offices”). Isabelle Nanty (“Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra”) voices a Russian duchess and Antoine de Caunes (“Lucky Luke”) a Russian Prince. Layout and editing is completed, Herold added.
