PARIS — Confirming early details of its 2010-11 lineup, giant Gallic paybox Canal Plus has acquired upcoming U.S. dramas “The Event” and “Body of Proof.”
Produced by Universal Media Studios and Stark Prods., “The Event” was bought from NBC Universal TV Distribution.
Part of NBC’s fall fiction push, “Event” toplines Jason Ritter (“Parenthood”) as an everyman who investigates his fiancee’s disappearance and uncovers a political conspiracy to assassinate the U.S. President.
“In terms of concept and narrative structure, ‘The Event’ is one of the most risk-taking series at present. It’s captivating,” said Aline Marrache-Tesseraud, Canal Plus’ director of acquisition for foreign fiction drama.
Centering on a conflictive neurosurgeon (Dana Delany, “Desperate Housewives”) who joins a medical examiner’s office, coroner procedural “Proof’s” “concept is pretty classic but we like its treatment,” Marrache-Tesseraud added.
“Proof” is produced by ABC Studios and Gross Ent.
Both series should play well with Canal Plus’ core sophisticated young adult demo, Marrache-Tesseraud said, confirming a U.S. fiction rebound in 2010.
“With production impacted by recession for the past two years, it’s been more difficult to find top-level series,” Marrache-Tesseraud said.
“This year the volume of production is up but shows available often seemed unoriginal or over-formatted.”
Canal Plus will shortly reveal further details of its fall season.
