U.K. IPTV service has under 500,000 subscribers

LONDON — U.K. IPTV service BT Vision has made a deal with NBC Universal giving it U.K. VOD rights to all of the studio’s 3D pics released during the next year.

Arrangement includes “Step Up 3D” and animation “Despicable Me.”

Company has also pacted with distrib Vertigo to show “StreetDance,” the U.K.’s first live-action 3D pic.

BT Vision, which has under 500,000 subscribers, is battling to compete more effectively against payboxes BSkyB and Virgin Media, which both recently launched 3D channels.

CEO Marc Watson hopes BT Vision’s position will be strengthened by next year’s launch of YouView, the IPTV service in which it is partnering with the BBC, ITV and Channel 4. – — Steve Clarke
