Blu-ray boosts U.K. home video biz

DVD sales up 31% in first quarter

LONDON — Blu-ray continues to drive robust sales in the U.K. home entertainment market, with total DVD sales up 31% in the territory for the first quarter of the year compared with the same period in 2009.

Figures released by the British Video Association found sales of Blu-ray were up 50% in value year-on-year hitting 2.7 million units for the first three months of the year. A total of 15.6 million units of Blu-ray discs have been sold since its launch in October 2006.

“The Hurt Locker,” “Up” and “2012” were the top three best selling Blu-ray titles, repping a collective 20% of all disc sales.

“This Is It” pushed the music genre up by 42% while children’s titles were up 38% thanks to “Up.”
