PARIS — Spain’s Bitart New Media and Ilusion Optica, the companies behind Roberto Caston’s Berlin sales hit “Ander,” are reteaming on Caston’s sophomore pic, “Los Tontos y los estupidos.”
Basque shingle HD Service will also co-produce.
A sensitive portrait of a repressed Basque gay farmer, “Ander” rolled off a Berlinale 2009 Panorama slot to clinch a string of territory deals. Major sales included France (Bodega), Germany (Bildkraft) and Italy (Atlantide Ent.)
Bilbao-based, production and services company Bitart also produced toonpic “Animal Crisis.” Optica is Caston’s Barcelona-based label.
Toplining “Ander” star Josean Bengoetxea and Goya-winning actress Emma Suarez (“El Perro del hortelano”), who play an estranged couple, “Los Tontos y los esupidos” (literally, “The Silly Ones and the Stupid Ones”) bears similarities with “Ander.”
“‘Tontos’ is about loneliness, family and the search for love,” said Caston at Paris Project, a three-day co-prod and sales forum, which wrapped Wednesday.
But “Tontos” is tragicomedy rather than drama, with an urban setting — here, Bilbao — and features an ensemble cast playing characters who deceive other people or themselves, often with telling consequences, Caston added.
Also written by Caston, “Tontos” is skedded to roll early summer 2011. It has sparked interest among “Ander” distributors, plus potential new co-production and distribution partners in Spain.
