Berlin project mart unveils lineup

Event to present 37 films from 22 countries

BERLIN — The Berlinale’s Co-Production Market is celebrating the selection of one of its projects in this year’s competition lineup as it gears up for the three-day event during next month’s festival.

So far, two Co-Production Market projects have been invited to screen at this year’s fest: Rafi Pitts’ Iranian-German co-production “The Hunter,” which unspools in competition, and Esmir Filho’s feature debut “The Famous and the Dead,” which screens in the youth sidebar Generation 14plus.

This year, the Co-Production Market is presenting 37 film projects from 22 countries to some 450 potential co-production and financing partners.

The Co-Production Market arranges 30-minute one-on-one meetings between producers and interested potential partners.

More than 1,000 meetings in two days will be scheduled based on the needs of the projects and the individual requests of the participants, according to market organizers.

More than 90 films — 40% of the projects selected — have been completed since the launch of the Co-Production Market in 2004.

Among the projects chosen this year are works by award-winning directors such as Chile’s Marco Bechis (“Birdwatchers”), Hungary’s Janosz Szasz (“The Witman Boys”) and Russia’s Andrey Zvyagintsev (“The Banishment”).

Also on the list are two directorial debuts by well-known thesps: “The Inheritance,” by Palestinian actress Hiam Abbass (“The Visitor”) and “In Embryo,” by Denmark’s Ulrich Thomsen (“Centurion”).

Organizers are also touting “The Have-Nots” as a special Co-Production Market “baby.” Munich shingle K5 Film acquired the film rights in 2006 at Breakfast and Books, the market’s annual joint event with the Frankfurt Book Fair, and it’s now returning with its adaptation in search of partners.

Of the market’s 37 projects this year, 23 have budgets of between E1 million ($1.4 million) and $10 million and already have at least 30% of their financing in place.

In collaboration with CineMart Rotterdam, three additional projects have been chosen for the Rotterdam-Berlinale Express and will participate in both the CineMart and the Co-Production Market.

The market also partners with the Berlinale Talent Campus on the Talent Project Market, which will present 11 projects by newcomers from a record 267 submissions received this year.

In addition to the prescheduled individual meetings, the Co-Production Market also offers speed matching and networking opportunities in the Producers’ Lounge.

Part of the European Film Market, the Co-Production Market takes place at the Berlin House of Representatives — directly across from the EFM’s venue at the Martin Gropius Bau — from Feb. 14-16. The Berlinale runs Feb. 11-21.
