Carrington named as chief content officer

LONDON — Turner Broadcasting has tapped one of the BBC’s most experienced children’s TV toppers as its chief content officer for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Michael Carrington, controller of tyke channel CBeebies, joins the London arm of the U.S. broadcaster in April.

He succeeds Finn Arnesen who left in October.

Carrington’s departure is a blow to the BBC, which had been counting on him to help lead the controversial relocation of the children’s department from London to a new base in the North of England.

In his new role, he will be responsible for the development and creation of all original series, co-productions and program acquisitions for Turner Broadcasting’s portfolio of children’s channels in both the U.K. and EMEA, including Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Cartoonito.

He has been controller of CBeebies, aimed at pre-schoolers, since 2006.

During a career the BBC lasting around two decades, he has worked in children’s acquisitions and animation, rising to become head of the operation.

At CBeebies, Carrington masterminded its transition to a multi-media platform.

He oversaw such web successes as the award-winning “Bugbears” site, in which children can raise such issues as bullying in a safe media environment.

He has also commissioned successful shows such as “Charlie and Lola” and “In the
