U.K. crime series features 'Wire' vet Idris Elba

BBC America will air the first season of “Luther,” starring Idris Elba (“The Wire”), later this year.

Cabler and its BBC mothership co-produced the six-episode first season of the hourlong crime series starring the London-born Elba, who played Stringer Bell on “Wire.” Elba plays a brilliant but self-destructive homicide detective. Series premiered in the U.K. earlier this spring.

BBC Worldwide is distributing the series, for which Elba is also an associate producer.

“It’s an intense psychological thriller which examines not only human depravity but the complex nature of love … and how it’s often this — our finest attribute — that leads us into darkness,” said suspense novelist Neil Cross (“MI-5”), who created the series.

Ruth Wilson (“Jane Eyre,” “The Prisoner”) co-stars as Alice, a murderer with whom Luther has an undeniably complicated connection.

Other cast members include Steven Mackintosh, Indira Varma, Paul McGann, Saskia Reeves and Warren Brown.

In addition to “The Wire,” Elba became known to American audiences through such roles as a six-episode guest arc on the U.S. version of “The Office.”
