Artificial Eye nabs ‘Peepli Live’

Pic screened at Sundance, Berlin

Indie distrib Artificial Eye has picked up U.K. rights to Indian social satire “Peepli Live.”

The dark comedy was penned by newcomer Anusha Rizvi, who co-directed it with her husband, Mahmood Farooqui. It was produced by Bollywood star Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao; co-producer was Ronnie Screwvala, founder of UTV Motion Pictures.

Story, which takes on hot-button Indian issues such as the caste system, poverty and injustice, centers on a poor farmer who is about to lose his land to the government.

Pic stars Raghubir Yadav (“Salaam Bombay,” “Lagaan,” “Water”) and model/TV presenter Malaika Shenoy.

“Peepli Live” was screened in the World Cinema section at the Sundance Film Festival and at the Berlin Film Festival.

Pic will bow in Blighty on Sept. 24.
