Amuse offers live 3D TV in Japan

Company to cover Sanja Festival on May 16

Japan’s first live 3D TV broadcast will cover Tokyo’s Sanja Festival of Asakusa Shrine, a colorful religious festival, on May 16.

Talent shop Amuse, whose roster includes some of the biggest names in the local biz, will use three 3D cameras to capture the day on which more than 100 portable shrines are paraded around the streets.

Annual fest, which has been held in various guises since the seventh century, is one of the three most important in Tokyo, drawing up to 2 million visitors in its three-day run.

The 3D show will be broadcast free for 17 hours on BS11, a cable and satellite channel that was the first in Japan to offer 3D programming, in March 2009.
