‘Agnosia’ nabs sales

Filmax Intl. seals deals for U.K., Canada, Germany

In some of the first reported major-territory sales on a European film at the European Film Market, Barcelona-based Filmax Intl. has pre-sold Eugenio Mira’s “Agnosia” to Momentum for the U.K., Alliance for Canada and Square One Entertainment for Germany.

All three pacts are all-rights deals.

Showing footage at Berlin, Filmax Intl. has also closed additional smaller territory sales, said topper Vicente Canales.

“Agnosia,” a fantasy-infused period thriller, is the soph feature from Mira, the Spanish director who won cult status with his debut, “The Birthday,” plus a reputation for technical virtuosity.

Spanish-language pic is produced by Miguel Angel Faura for Roxbury, Madrugada Pics and Telecinco Cinema, producers of Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” and Juan Antonio Bayona’s “The Orphanage.”

Screenplay is by Antonio Trashorras, del Toro’s co-scribe on “The Devil’s Backbone.” Del Toro consulted on its screenplay.

Set in 1899, “Agnosia” stars Barbara Goenaga (“Time Crimes”) as an heiress who has been bequeathed vital industrial secrets. But she suffers a brain condition — agnosia — which prevents her from correctly understanding what she sees.

Pic also stars Eduardo Noriega (“Vantage Point”) and Martina Gedeck (“The Lives of Others”).
