3D helps U.K. B.O. rise 3%

Receipts total $784.7 mil in six months

Blighty’s box office is up 3% to £516.7 million ($784.7 million) year-on-year thanks to the slew of 3D pics on offer in the first half of this year, according to the Film Distributors’ Assn.

Top films so far are “Avatar” ($139 million), “Alice in Wonderland” ($64.4 million), “Iron Man 2” ($30.5 million), “Sex and the City 2” ($30.4 million) and “Clash of the Titans” ($29.2 million). “Avatar,” “Alice” and “Clash” were released in 3D.

Distribs released 288 titles in Blighty in the first half of the year, 18 more than in the same period in 2009.

FDA prexy David Puttnam said the result was encouraging despite “distractions” such as good weather and the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament.
