Thessaloniki docu fest going digital

All 470 titles will be available in format for first time

The Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival is going digital, with all 470 titles in its International Doc Market available digitally for the first time.

The market, which runs March 15-20 alongside the festival, was launched in 1999 and attracts around 50 buyers from Europe, the U.S. and Canada, such as Madeleine Avramoussis (Arte, France), Lorraine Hess (Link TV, U.S.), Jordi Ambros (Televisio de Catalunya, Spain), Sabine Rollberg (WDR, Germany), Francis Kandel (Canal Plus, France) and Alain Johnson (Planete Multithematiques, France).

This year market participants will be able to watch films in 30 fully equipped digital booths, without the use of DVD or VHS.

The festival, which runs March 12-21, will present around 170 films and this year includes a new section, Planet in Peril, introduced to represent “the urgency with which the earth’s problems need to be recorded, addressed and solved.”

The festival includes the world premiere of “Park Mark” by Iran’s Baktash Abtin, about a homeless drug addict living on the streets of Tehran who was once a husband, father and affluent immigrant in the U.S.

International bows include Austrian director Fidolin Schonwiese’s “The Five Cardinal Points,” about a Mexican village devastated by industrial farming; “Africa Is a Woman’s Name” by Ingrid Sinclair, Bridget Pickering and Wanjiru Kinyanjiu about three very different women from the continent; and “When the Dragon Swallowed the Sun” by U.S.-based German director Dirk Simon, about the quest for freedom in Tibet.
