Pifan to open with ‘Experiment’

'Death Bell 2' set to close festival

South Korea’s Puchon Fantastic Film Festival (Pifan) will open with helmer Paul Scheuring’s “The Experiment,” starring Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker, on July 15 and close with Korean helmer Yoo Seon-dong’s “Death Bell 2: Bloody Camp” July 25.

Fest unveiled its program on Tuesday, comprising 193 films from 42 countries including 34 world premieres and 22 international preems.

Under the new fest director Kim Young-bin, Pifan has reorganized its sections and venues to make it a more audience friendly event.

Twelve pics will vie in the Puchon Choice competition, including Cannes’ Critics’ Week entry “Bedevilled” and U.S. indie horror “The House of the Devil.”

The World Fantastic Cinema sidebar will unspool 40 films. This year it focuses on Asian and North American new genre films, including Lee Toland Krieger’s “The Vicious Kind,” Jac Schaeffer’s “Timer,” Stuart Culpepper’s “Jordan,” Marcus Dunstan’s “Collector” and John Elfers’ “Finale.”

Strange Homage spotlights Jaco Van Dormael’s Venice entry “Mr. Nobody,” Juan Jose Campanella’s foreign Oscar winner, “The Secret in Their Eyes,” and Gaspar Noe’s Cannes entry “Enter the Void.”

Special Programs taps four films by helmer Terry Gilliam, including “Jabberwocky” (1977) and “Time Bandits” (1981), as well as “The Millennium” trilogy based on Stieg Larsson’s hit novels.

Retrospectives will unspool digitally restored versions of Korean action maestro Lee Doo-yong’s 1970s pics from the Korean Film Archive and eight films from Japan’s iconic robot animation franchise, “The Mobile Suit Gundam.”

Meanwhile, Pifan’s market — the Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF) — unveiled its program, running July 18-22.

Apart from the It Project, providing professional help from industryites and investors for the teams behind 15 new films, NAFF offers industry program focusing on Taiwan’s new trends in genre films.

Project Spotlight highlights four films from Taiwan and holds about Taiwan’s film business.

The theme of Pifan’s film education program, Fantastic Film School, is Swiss design in Hollywood.

Concept artist and art director Christian Lorenz Scheurer (“The Fifth Element,” “Titanic”) will hold a masterclass about his works.
