Doerrie's 'Hairdresser,' Baier's 'Henry' to screen
BERLIN — Rob Marshall’s “Nine” is among titles unspooling in the Berlin Film Festival’s Special section.
Part of the official program, Berlinale Special presents recent works by contemporary filmmakers and classics. A restored cut of “Metropolis” is unspooling this year.
High-profile local titles include “The Hairdresser” by Doris Doerrie (“Cherry Blossoms”), about a Berlin hairdresser setting up her own salon; Jo Baier’s historical epic “Henry of Navarre,” about the 16th-century French king; and Matti Geschonneck’s “Boxhagener Platz,” a family drama-murder mystery set in 1968 East Berlin.
Anne Linsel and Rainer Hoffmann’s documentary “Dancing Dreams” looks at late choreographer Pina Bausch and the staging of her dance-theater piece “Kontakthof” with teenage performers.
To celebrate its 60th anniversary, the fest is screening “Trace of the Bears,” a look back at the history of the Berlinale by Hans-Christoph Blumenberg and Alfred Holighaus, the outgoing head of the Berlinale’s Perspektive Deutsches Kino German sidebar.
Also unspooling is “Revolution,” a compilation pic examining revolution in modern-day Mexico, comprised of works from Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna, Fernando Eimbcke, Mariana Chenillo and Patricia Riggen.
Other screeners include “Moloch Tropical,” by Haitian filmmaker and former minister of culture Raoul Peck, about the last days of a Haitian dictator; Silvio Soldini’s “What More Do I Want”; and Safy Nebbou’s “The Other Dumas,” starring Gerard Depardieu as 19th-century scribe Alexandre Dumas.
The reconstructed original cut of Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” will screen along with restored prints of Pare Lorentz’s 1946 documentary “Nuremberg” and Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s 1973 “World on a Wire.”
The fest runs Feb. 11-21.
