‘Mosquito’ nets kudos

Karlovy Vary film fest honors Vila film

The 45th Karlovy Vary Film Festival wrapped Saturday with praises for Eastern European film and a Crystal Globe for film for Spanish helmer Agusti Vila’s ensembler “The Mosquito Net” at the closing gala.

Vila also wrote the lauded script about a family divided by emotional barriers, starring Geraldine Chaplin as an Alzheimer’s sufferer.

Rajko Grlic scored the directing prize for Croatian-Serbian-Slovenian philandering chronicle “Just Between Us,” with a special jury prize going to Czech animation “Kooky” by Jan Sverak and special mentions to Russia’s lyrical “Another Sky” and Iran’s study in taxi encounters, “There Are Things You Don’t Know.” Actor kudo was split between Mateusz Kosciukiewicz and Filip Garbacz for Poland’s “Mother Teresa of Cats,” a fact-based mystery, while Anais Demoustier picked up the actress gong for her turn as a manipulative teen in France’s “Sweet Evil.”

Crowds of over 11,000 decamped to the Czech Republic spa town for the nine-day fest, encompassing 358 screenings, many sold out, including 27 international preems.
