Maya Entertainment nabs ‘Chamaco’

Production co. picks up N. American rights to biopic

Los Angeles-based Maya Entertainment has snapped up North American rights to U.S. – Mexican co-production “Chamaco” (The Kid) before its Stateside premiere at the Palm Springs Film Festival, which began Tuesday.

Martin Sheen and Michael Madsen star in the $2 million-budget pic about a young boxer, which debuted at Mexico’s Morelia Film Festival in October.

Pic, also featuring Mexico’s four-time world boxing champion Marco Antonio Barrera, is co-produced by L.A. shingle Rogue Arts (whose founder Kirk Harris appears in the pic) and Ivania Films of Mexico City.

Biopic was helmed by Miguel Necoechea who also co-wrote the screenplay with Canadian filmmaker Carl Bessai (“Emile,” “Lola”) and Harris, a former boxing Golden Gloves champion.

Chamaco” was produced by Harris, his Rogue Arts partner Don Franken and Necoechea.

Maya, which also picked up the worldwide sales rights, aims for a limited release in eight to 12 U.S. cities in the summer.
