Locarno to honor Chiara Mastroianni

French thesp to receive Excellence Award

Chiara Mastroianni will collect this year’s Excellence Award at the Locarno Film Festival.

The 38-year-old French star and daughter of Euro-arthouse heavyweights Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni, will receive the prize on Aug. 6, while the 63rd edition of the fest runs Aug. 4-14.

In 1994 Mastroianni was nominated for a Cesar as most promising French female newcomer. Over the next decade she made her name in France and abroad with performances in films from high-profile helmers including Robert Altman’s “Pret a porter” in 1994; Raoul Ruiz’s “Three Lives and Only One Death” in 1996; and Gregg Araki’s “Nowhere” in 1997.

Fest artistic director Olivier Pere said: “Undoubtedly one of the most talented actresses of her generation, Chiara Mastroianni has employed her heritage of talent and beauty to brilliant effect in a challenging and prestigious series of films, made with some of the masters of contemporary cinema and its best directors.”
