Hallstrom to direct 'Salmon Fishing'
Lionsgate U.K. is producing its second Brit feature, “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen,” alongside BBC Films and Paul Webster at Kudos Pictures and is selling the title at the Cannes market.
Lasse Hallstrom will direct the romantic comedy, which stars Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Thomas.
Pic is in line with Lionsgate’s attempt to beef up local production in the territory following its first foray with 2009’s Jason Statham starrer “Blitz.” The U.K. arm also enjoys a degree of autonomy from its U.S. parent when it comes to acquisitions.
“Slumdog Millionaire” scribe Simon Beaufoy penned “Fishing,” which follows an ordinary Englishman’s path of self-discovery as he becomes involved in a project that makes Yemen a new home for salmon.
Lionsgate U.K. CEO Zygi Kamasa, who brokered the deal with Webster and Paula Jalfon of BBC Films, said that it was a “fantastic opportunity” for the company to work on a “charming British romantic comedy.”
