Im Sang-soo's thriller played at Cannes
IFC Films has picked up South Korea’s “The Housemaid” for the U.S.
Helmed by Im Sang-soo, pic is a remake of Korea’s classic thriller from the ’60s and played in competition at Cannes this year.
Starring Jeon Do-yeon (“Secret Sunshine”), pic is about a young maid who comes to work for a wealthy couple and gets involved in an affair with the husband.
The deal was negotiated by IFC Films’ Jonathan Sehring and Mirovision’s Jason Chae.
According to Mirovision, the pic will play North American festivals, including a possible Toronto slot, before U.S. release.
Pic was a hit this year in Korea, selling more than 2.3 million tickets, and was sold to territories including Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Italy, Australia and Greece. Pretty Pictures releases the pic in France in Sept. 15.
