Fox and Disney are among 11 applicants vying for one of the digital broadcast satellite (BS) channels that will open up in Japan when the analog broadcasting signal is switched off in July 2011.
Demand for the free-to-air channels is huge. Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has received requests for 224 slots, more than twice the number available.
Also Animax Broadcast Japan, Imagica TV, BS Fox and Broadcast Satellite Disney have pitched for the six pay TV slots.
The ministry will announce its decision in September, following a report from the Radio Regulatory Council. Broadcasts will begin December 2011.
